What is Stellar?
Stellar was created in 2014 by Jed McCaleb and Joyce Kim. The network is supported by the Stellar Development Foundation, a non-profit organization, and focuses on cross-border transfers and financial inclusion.
The native asset is called the lumen (XLM). It pays fees and prevents abuse of the network, since every account must hold a minimum balance.
How Stellar works
The network does not use mining. In the Stellar Consensus Protocol, each validator chooses which others it trusts, and agreement among those groups confirms transactions in a few seconds.
Institutions called anchors issue tokens on the network that represent currencies and other assets, and a native decentralized exchange allows converting them. Since 2024, the network has also run smart contracts through the Soroban platform.
What XLM is used for
- Low-cost remittances and international payments.
- Issuance of stablecoins and tokenized assets by institutions.
- Paying fees and meeting account minimums on the network.
Risks and points of attention
- The foundation holds a large share of lumens, and how those tokens are distributed influences available supply.
- Direct competition from other payment networks and from stablecoins on larger blockchains.
- Adoption by companies does not necessarily translate into demand for XLM.
- Volatility typical of crypto assets.

Frequently asked questions about Stellar
What is the difference between Stellar and XRP?
Both networks focus on payments and share a founder, Jed McCaleb. Stellar is backed by a non-profit foundation and targets individuals and small institutions; the XRP Ledger is more closely associated with the company Ripple.
Can XLM be mined?
No. All lumens were created at launch. In 2019, the foundation destroyed about half of the supply, leaving approximately 50 billion.
How much does a Stellar transaction cost?
The minimum fee is a very small fraction of a lumen, which puts the cost per transaction well below one cent.
