What is Uniswap?

Uniswap is a protocol created by Hayden Adams and launched in 2018 that lets users swap tokens directly between wallets, with no intermediary and no order book.

The UNI token was distributed in September 2020 to early users of the platform, the team and investors. It gives voting power over the treasury and over protocol changes.

How Uniswap works

Instead of matching buyers and sellers, the protocol uses liquidity pools: users deposit token pairs and a mathematical formula sets the price of each swap. Liquidity providers receive part of the fees paid by traders.

Decisions are made by vote of UNI holders. Governance can also decide whether part of protocol fees is directed to the token; the rules in force should be checked in official sources.

What UNI is used for

  • Voting on protocol governance proposals.
  • Delegating voting power to representatives.
  • Exposure to the growth of decentralized trading.

Risks and points of attention

  • The token's value depends on governance decisions about revenue distribution.
  • Competition from other decentralized exchanges and aggregators.
  • Regulatory risk around trading protocols without an intermediary.
  • Providing liquidity in the protocol is different from holding UNI and carries its own risk, impermanent loss.

Frequently asked questions about Uniswap

Does holding UNI entitle me to Uniswap fees?

Not automatically. UNI is a governance token, and how fees are allocated depends on rules approved by vote. Check the current rules on the protocol's official channels.

What is a decentralized exchange?

It is a protocol that lets users swap tokens through smart contracts, straight from their wallet, without depositing funds with a company.

Do I need UNI to use Uniswap?

No. Swaps pay fees in the token of the network being used, such as ETH. UNI is for governance.
