What is NEAR Protocol?

NEAR was founded by Illia Polosukhin and Alexander Skidanov and went live in 2020. The initial goal was to make decentralized applications easier to use, with human-readable account names instead of long addresses.

In recent years the project has presented itself as the blockchain for artificial intelligence, focusing on autonomous agents and on transactions that cross several networks without the user noticing.

How NEAR Protocol works

The network uses proof of stake and a sharding technique called Nightshade: processing is divided among groups of validators, which increases capacity without raising fees much.

The NEAR token pays fees, is used for staking and rewards validators through annual issuance. Part of each transaction's fees is burned.

What NEAR is used for

  • Paying fees and data storage on the network.
  • Staking by delegating to validators.
  • Cross-chain operations through intents, where the user defines the desired outcome.

Risks and points of attention

  • Strong competition among smart contract networks and among AI-related projects.
  • The artificial intelligence narrative may not turn into actual network usage.
  • Uncapped supply, with continuous issuance to pay validators.
  • High volatility.

Frequently asked questions about NEAR Protocol

What sets NEAR apart from other blockchains?

Sharding the network to scale, human-readable account names and a recent focus on artificial intelligence applications and cross-chain transactions.

Does NEAR have a maximum supply?

No. The protocol issues new tokens every year to reward validators, and part of the fees is burned.

How do I stake NEAR?

By delegating tokens to a validator through a compatible wallet. Rewards are variable and withdrawals have a waiting period of a few days.
