What is Avalanche?

Avalanche launched in September 2020 through Ava Labs, a company founded by computer scientist Emin Gün Sirer.

Its main application network, the C-Chain, is compatible with Ethereum tooling. In addition, any project can launch its own blockchain inside the ecosystem, with rules and validators it defines.

How Avalanche works

Consensus works by repeated sampling: each validator polls small random groups of other validators until the network converges on a decision, which takes around one second.

AVAX pays fees, which are burned, and is staked to validate the network. Maximum supply is 720 million units.

What AVAX is used for

  • Paying transaction fees on the network.
  • Staking to validate the network or delegate to validators.
  • Foundation for custom blockchains for companies, games and tokenized assets.

Risks and points of attention

  • Intense competition with Ethereum, its layer-2 networks and other platforms.
  • Running a validator requires a large AVAX deposit, which limits direct participation.
  • Activity spread across several blockchains in the ecosystem, which can fragment liquidity.
  • High volatility.

Frequently asked questions about Avalanche

Does AVAX have a maximum supply?

Yes, 720 million units. Fees paid on the network are burned, which reduces supply over time.

Is Avalanche compatible with Ethereum?

The C-Chain, its main application network, runs the same smart contracts and supports the same wallets used on Ethereum.

What are Avalanche's custom blockchains?

They are independent networks created inside the ecosystem, formerly called subnets, with their own validators and rules but connected to Avalanche infrastructure.
