Market capitalization: what it measures and what it leaves out

Market cap organizes an asset's relative size, but it should be read alongside supply, liquidity and distribution.

A measure of scale, not quality

Market capitalization is the price of one unit multiplied by the circulating supply. It is useful for comparing the relative scale of assets and building rankings, but it does not by itself show whether an asset is liquid, decentralized or fairly priced.

A large market cap can exist alongside thin order books, concentrated token ownership or important future token releases.

Circulating supply and fully diluted value

Circulating supply aims to represent units available to the market. Fully diluted value applies the current price to the maximum supply, when known. The difference can reveal how much supply may still be issued, but it does not predict when or how that supply will reach the market.

A responsible comparison routine

Use market cap to locate scale. Then compare volume, depth near the price, supply concentration and scheduled unlocks. Finally, observe the series over time: one day's snapshot is not an investment thesis.
