What is Bitcoin Cash?
Bitcoin Cash emerged on August 1, 2017 from a split (hard fork) of the Bitcoin network. The separation followed a long debate over how to increase transaction capacity.
Anyone holding bitcoins at that moment received the same amount of BCH. Since then, the two networks have run independently, with their own histories and prices.
How Bitcoin Cash works
The network keeps Bitcoin's foundations: proof of work with SHA-256, blocks every ten minutes on average, halvings and a maximum supply of 21 million. The main difference is the block size limit, which was raised to 32 MB.
Larger blocks hold more transactions and keep fees low, but require more storage and bandwidth from anyone running a full node. The network has also gained its own features, such as native tokens.
What BCH is used for
- Low-cost payments and transfers.
- Store of value with limited supply, on a smaller scale than Bitcoin.
- Issuing native tokens on the network.
Risks and points of attention
- Mining power far below Bitcoin's, which lowers the theoretical cost of attacking the network.
- Lower adoption and liquidity than Bitcoin.
- A history of further community splits, such as the one that created Bitcoin SV in 2018.
- Confusion of names and addresses with Bitcoin can lead to mistaken transfers.
