What is Litecoin?

Litecoin was created in October 2011 by Charlie Lee, a former Google engineer, as a lighter version of Bitcoin for everyday payments.

The network has run continuously since then and served as a testing ground for improvements that later reached Bitcoin, such as SegWit.

How Litecoin works

The network uses proof of work with the Scrypt algorithm and produces a block every 2.5 minutes, four times faster than Bitcoin. Its maximum supply, 84 million, is also four times larger, and issuance is halved at each halving.

Since 2022, an optional extension called MWEB has allowed transactions with hidden amounts. Mining is done together with Dogecoin.

What LTC is used for

  • Payments and transfers with low fees and fast confirmation.
  • Store of value with limited supply.
  • Moving funds between exchanges, as a cheap and widely supported network.

Risks and points of attention

  • Little differentiation from Bitcoin and from newer networks.
  • A limited application ecosystem.
  • MWEB's privacy features have led some exchanges to restrict the asset in certain countries.
  • Volatility typical of crypto assets.
