What is Mantle?
Mantle emerged in 2023 from BitDAO, an organization with one of the largest treasuries in crypto, backed by the Bybit exchange. The BIT token was converted into MNT in that process.
Besides the layer-2 network, the ecosystem includes staking products for ether and tokenized bitcoin and initiatives aimed at institutions.
How Mantle works
Mantle Network processes transactions off Ethereum's main chain and records the necessary data on it to inherit its security. Fees are paid in MNT rather than ETH, unlike other networks of this kind.
MNT holders vote on the use of the treasury and the direction of the ecosystem. The token is also used in benefits programs on Bybit.
What MNT is used for
- Paying fees on Mantle Network.
- Voting on governance and treasury allocation.
- Benefits and programs on partner platforms such as Bybit.
Risks and points of attention
- Close ties to Bybit: events at the exchange affect perception of the token.
- Like other layer-2 networks, it relies on components that are still centralized, such as the operator that orders transactions.
- Concentrated treasury and voting power.
- Intense competition among layer-2 networks.
