What is Internet Computer?
The network was launched in May 2021 by the DFINITY Foundation, a Swiss organization founded by Dominic Williams, after years of research.
The ambition is to replace centralized cloud services: instead of using the blockchain only to record transactions, applications run entirely on the network, from code to interface.
How Internet Computer works
Applications run in units called canisters, hosted on machines owned by independent operators in data centers. To pay for processing, developers convert ICP into cycles, and the converted ICP is burned.
The network is governed by a voting system in which holders lock ICP for long periods to gain voting power and rewards.
What ICP is used for
- Conversion into cycles to pay for compute and storage.
- Locking to take part in governance and earn rewards.
- Decentralized applications, including AI models running on the network.
Risks and points of attention
- A history of a very sharp price decline after launch in 2021.
- Large influence of the DFINITY Foundation over governance and development.
- An architecture unlike other networks makes integration and assessment harder.
- Taking part in governance requires long token lock-ups.

Frequently asked questions about Internet Computer
What sets Internet Computer apart?
The aim of hosting complete applications, with code, data and interface, directly on the blockchain, without cloud company servers.
What are cycles?
They are the unit used to pay for compute on the network. They are obtained by converting ICP, which is burned in the process.
Does ICP have a maximum supply?
No. New tokens are issued as governance and operator rewards, while part is burned through network usage.
Where does the Internet Computer price on this page come from?
