What is PAX Gold?
PAXG was launched in 2019 by Paxos Trust Company, an institution supervised by New York State's financial regulator.
Each token corresponds to ownership of one fine troy ounce of gold, about 31.1 grams, from a bar meeting the London market standard. Its price tracks the international gold price.
How PAX Gold works
Paxos holds the gold in custody and issues the same amount of tokens. Holders can look up the serial number of the bar tied to their balance, and the company publishes monthly reports verifying the reserves.
Redemption can be in physical bars, for large quantities, or in dollars. There are issuance, redemption and on-chain transfer fees.
What PAXG is used for
- Exposure to the gold price with 24-hour trading and fractional amounts.
- Diversifying crypto portfolios.
- Collateral on lending platforms.
Risks and points of attention
- Risk of the issuer and the gold custodian.
- Physical redemption limited to large quantities.
- The price can drift from the gold price when liquidity is thin.
- In other currencies, the value also depends on the dollar exchange rate.
