What is Polkadot?
Polkadot was conceived by Gavin Wood, an Ethereum co-founder, and went live in 2020. Development is led by Parity Technologies with support from the Web3 Foundation.
The aim is to let different blockchains, each with its own purpose, exchange data and value with one another without relying on external bridges.
How Polkadot works
A central chain coordinates security and communication. Blockchains connected to it inherit that security and pay in DOT for the processing time they use.
Holders nominate validators through staking and vote directly on every network change, including treasury spending. In 2025, governance approved a cap on supply, which had previously been unlimited.
What DOT is used for
- Staking by nominating validators, with a waiting period to withdraw.
- Voting on governance proposals.
- Paying for processing capacity and network fees.
Risks and points of attention
- Technical complexity and lower adoption than competing networks.
- A history of high token inflation, partly addressed by the supply cap approved in 2025.
- Withdrawing staked tokens takes weeks.
- High volatility.
