What is LayerZero?

LayerZero was created by LayerZero Labs, led by Bryan Pellegrino, and has operated since 2022. The ZRO token was distributed in June 2024.

The protocol is not a blockchain: it is a messaging layer deployed on dozens of networks that lets applications and tokens exist on several of them at once.

How LayerZero works

When an application sends a message from one network to another, independent verifiers chosen by that application confirm the message is legitimate, and an executor delivers it at the destination. Each application defines its own security level.

ZRO holders vote periodically on whether the protocol should charge an additional fee on messages, with the revenue used to buy back and burn the token.

What ZRO is used for

  • Voting on protocol governance decisions.
  • Exposure to the volume of cross-chain messages and transfers.

Risks and points of attention

  • Cross-chain communication is one of the most attacked areas in the industry: an application's misconfiguration can cause losses.
  • Security depends on the verifiers each application chooses, which can be few.
  • Scheduled token unlocks for the team and investors.
  • Competition from other interoperability protocols.

Frequently asked questions about LayerZero

Is LayerZero a blockchain?

No. It is a messaging protocol that connects different blockchains, used by applications to transfer tokens and data between them.

What is an omnichain token?

It is a token that exists natively on several networks and can be moved between them by the protocol, without relying on a wrapped version on each network.

What is the maximum supply of ZRO?

1 billion tokens, part of which is still subject to scheduled unlocks.
