What is Pyth Network?
Pyth was born in the Solana ecosystem with support from large trading firms and now distributes data to dozens of blockchains. The PYTH token launched in November 2023.
What sets it apart is where the data comes from: prices are submitted by the institutions that trade the assets themselves, not collected from public sources by intermediaries.
How Pyth Network works
Dozens of providers publish prices for crypto assets, stocks, currencies and commodities, which are aggregated into a value accompanied by a confidence interval. Applications pull the latest price when they need it and pay for the update.
PYTH holders can stake to vote and to back the data quality of specific providers, with rewards and penalties. The network also sells data by subscription to institutions.
What PYTH is used for
- Voting in network governance.
- Staking to back data quality.
- Exposure to demand for market data on blockchains.
Risks and points of attention
- Scheduled token unlocks in large batches increase supply.
- Direct competition with Chainlink and other oracles.
- Price errors can cause losses in applications that use the data.
- The link between network revenue and token value depends on governance decisions.
