What is Ether.fi?
Ether.fi was founded by Mike Silagadze and gained ground in 2024 as the largest liquid restaking protocol: users deposit ETH, receive a token representing the deposit and can still use it in other applications.
The company later began presenting itself as a crypto neobank, with yield products and a card that lets users spend against their deposited assets. The ETHFI token launched in March 2024.
How Ether.fi works
Deposited ETH is staked on Ethereum and also reused to secure other services, a practice called restaking. In return, users receive a liquid token that accrues the rewards.
ETHFI holders vote on protocol decisions. Part of revenue is used to buy back the token, under rules approved by governance.
What ETHFI is used for
- Voting in protocol governance.
- Staking the token in programs defined by governance.
- Exposure to platform revenue through buybacks.
Risks and points of attention
- Restaking stacks risks: Ethereum network penalties, failures of the additional services and smart contracts.
- The liquid token can trade below the value of ETH in times of stress.
- Scheduled token unlocks for the team and investors.
- Products such as the card depend on partners and on rules that vary by country.
