What is Curve DAO?
Curve was created by Michael Egorov and launched in 2020. Its pricing formula was designed to swap stablecoins and different versions of the same asset with little price movement.
The protocol became a core piece of decentralized finance and later launched its own stablecoin, crvUSD, and a lending market.
How Curve DAO works
Liquidity providers deposit assets in pools and earn trading fees and CRV emissions. Those who lock CRV for up to four years gain voting power to direct emissions and a share of protocol revenue.
Competition among projects to attract those votes gave rise to an incentive market around the token.
What CRV is used for
- Locking to vote and receive part of protocol revenue.
- Rewarding liquidity providers.
- Boosting the rewards of those who provide liquidity and hold locked tokens.
Risks and points of attention
- In 2023, a software flaw allowed the theft of tens of millions of dollars from protocol pools.
- Large loans by the founder backed by CRV were liquidated in 2024, with a strong impact on the price.
- Continuous token issuance up to the maximum cap.
- Vote locking can last years.
