What is GHO?
GHO was launched in July 2023 by the community of Aave, the largest lending protocol in decentralized finance.
Unlike company-issued stablecoins, GHO has no bank reserves. It is created when an Aave user borrows GHO against crypto assets deposited as collateral.
How GHO works
Interest paid by GHO borrowers goes to the treasury of the organization governing Aave, not to depositors. The interest rate and issuance limits are set by vote.
To hold the peg, the protocol uses modules that allow swapping GHO for other stablecoins at a fixed price and a savings program that rewards holders.
What GHO is used for
- Digital dollar borrowing for Aave users.
- Liquidity and collateral in decentralized finance applications.
- Yield through the token's savings version.
Risks and points of attention
- In its first months, GHO traded below 1 dollar for an extended period.
- The peg depends on parameters set by governance and on collateral value.
- Smart contract and price oracle risk.
- Smaller circulation than the main stablecoins.
