What is Cardano?

Cardano launched in 2017 under the leadership of Charles Hoskinson, one of Ethereum's co-founders. The project stands out for publishing and academically reviewing each step before implementing it.

The ADA coin honors Ada Lovelace, the 19th-century mathematician. The network began running smart contracts in 2021.

How Cardano works

The network uses Ouroboros, a proof-of-stake protocol. Holders delegate ADA to validation pools without locking or transferring their tokens, and earn variable rewards.

Maximum supply is 45 billion ADA. Since the governance phase, holders and elected representatives vote on change proposals and on the use of the network treasury.

What ADA is used for

  • Paying transaction and smart contract fees.
  • Staking by delegation, with no lock-up period.
  • Voting on network governance proposals.

Risks and points of attention

  • A smaller application ecosystem and DeFi volume than competing networks.
  • A slower development pace, a consequence of its review-first method.
  • Intense competition among smart contract platforms.
  • High volatility, with deep drawdowns in bear markets.
