What is BNB?
BNB was launched in July 2017 by Binance, initially as a token on Ethereum to fund the exchange and offer trading fee discounts. It later moved to its own network, now called BNB Chain.
Today BNB is the asset used to pay fees on BNB Smart Chain, a blockchain compatible with Ethereum applications, and on associated networks such as opBNB and Greenfield.
How BNB works
BNB Smart Chain uses a mechanism called Proof of Staked Authority: a limited set of validators, chosen by the amount of BNB delegated to them, produces the blocks. This allows fast blocks and low fees at the cost of less decentralization than networks with thousands of validators.
Supply is reduced through burns. An automatic mechanism destroys BNB every quarter based on price and network activity, and part of each block's fees is burned as well. The stated goal is to reach 100 million units.
What BNB is used for
- Paying transaction fees on BNB Smart Chain and ecosystem networks.
- Fee discounts and access to programs on the Binance exchange.
- Staking by delegating to validators, with variable rewards.
- Collateral and liquidity in the network's decentralized finance applications.
Risks and points of attention
- Dependence on Binance: the token's value is tied to the exchange's reputation, operations and regulatory standing in several countries.
- Centralization: a small number of validators produce blocks, which concentrates control of the network.
- Incident history: an ecosystem bridge was exploited in October 2022 and the network was temporarily paused.
- Volatility typical of crypto assets, with sharp declines in bear markets.

What is the BNB burn?
It is the permanent destruction of part of the tokens. It happens automatically every quarter and also in every block, using part of the fees, reducing circulating supply over time.
