What is Dogecoin?
Dogecoin was created in December 2013 by engineers Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer as a joke based on the Shiba Inu dog meme. There was no initial sale and no venture funding.
Its code derives from Litecoin. The project is maintained by volunteers and the Dogecoin Foundation, with no company behind it.
How Dogecoin works
The network uses proof of work with the Scrypt algorithm and produces one block per minute. Since 2014 it has been mined together with Litecoin (merged mining), which strengthens network security.
Each block issues 10,000 DOGE, with no supply cap. That adds about 5 billion units per year, an inflation rate that falls in percentage terms as total supply grows.
What DOGE is used for
- Small payments and tipping between users online.
- Speculative trading, heavily influenced by social media.
- A means of payment accepted by some merchants.
Risks and points of attention
- Price is highly sensitive to statements by public figures and to social media trends.
- Uncapped supply: continuous issuance pressures the price if demand does not keep up.
- Slower development and a smaller application ecosystem than other networks.
- Large balances concentrated in a few addresses.
