What is USDC?

USDC is a token launched in 2018 by Circle, a US financial technology company, initially in partnership with the exchange Coinbase. Each unit aims to be worth one dollar and can be redeemed for dollars by the issuer's eligible customers.

It is the second-largest stablecoin in circulation and runs natively on several blockchains, such as Ethereum, Solana and Base.

How USDC works

Circle issues USDC when it receives dollars and destroys tokens on redemption. Reserves are held in cash and short-term US Treasuries, mostly inside a dedicated fund, and the company publishes monthly assurance reports prepared by an accounting firm.

USDC on each network is a distinct token. Circle offers its own cross-chain transfer protocol, but sending to a network the destination does not support can result in lost funds.

What USDC is used for

  • Trading on exchanges as a dollar alternative.
  • Payments and international transfers with fast settlement.
  • Collateral and liquidity in decentralized finance.
  • Settlement between companies and financial institutions.

Risks and points of attention

  • Issuer and custodian bank risk: in March 2023, USDC traded below $0.90 when part of its reserves was stuck at a bank that failed; the peg recovered days later.
  • Freezing: Circle can block tokens at specific addresses when legally required.
  • Regulatory risk: stablecoin rules differ from country to country.
  • Currency risk: the value in other currencies follows the dollar exchange rate.

Frequently asked questions about USDC

Is USDC safe?

USDC is backed by cash and short-term government securities and publishes monthly reports, but it is not risk-free: it depends on the issuer, custodian banks and regulation. It temporarily lost its peg in 2023.

What is the difference between USDC and USDT?

They are issued by different companies (Circle and Tether), with different reserve composition, reporting and regulatory status. Both aim to be worth one dollar.

Does USDC pay interest?

The token itself pays no yield. Yields offered by platforms come from lending or other operations, which add counterparty risk.

Why does USDC move against the Brazilian real?

Because it tracks the dollar. When the exchange rate rises or falls, the value of USDC in reais changes by the same proportion, even with the peg intact.
