What is Chainlink?

Blockchains cannot query outside information on their own. Chainlink solves this with a decentralized network of operators that collects, checks and delivers data to smart contracts.

The project was founded by Sergey Nazarov and Steve Ellis, with an initial token sale in 2017. Its services are used by a large share of decentralized finance applications.

How Chainlink works

Several independent operators fetch the same data from different sources, and the answers are aggregated into a single value published on chain. That way, one faulty source does not compromise the result.

Beyond price feeds, the network offers CCIP, a protocol for sending tokens and messages between blockchains, and services such as verifiable randomness. Operators are paid in LINK, and part of the token can be staked as a guarantee of service.

What LINK is used for

  • Paying operators for data and cross-chain services.
  • Staking as a guarantee of oracle quality.
  • Infrastructure for DeFi, stablecoins and assets tokenized by institutions.

Risks and points of attention

  • The token's value depends on demand for the services turning into demand for LINK.
  • A significant part of supply remains with the organization behind the project, which makes periodic releases.
  • Oracle failures or delays can cause losses in the applications that rely on them.
  • Volatility typical of crypto assets.

Frequently asked questions about Chainlink

What is a blockchain oracle?

It is the service that brings information from outside the network, such as prices or event results, into a smart contract.

Does LINK have its own blockchain?

No. LINK is a token issued on Ethereum and also available on other networks. The Chainlink network is made up of oracle operators.

What is the maximum supply of LINK?

1 billion tokens. Not all are in circulation: part is released gradually by the project's organization.
