What is XRP?
XRP is the currency of the XRP Ledger, a blockchain that went live in 2012, developed by David Schwartz, Jed McCaleb and Arthur Britto. It was designed to settle payments in a few seconds with very low fees.
Ripple is a private company that uses the XRP Ledger in payment products and received a large share of the tokens at launch. XRP and Ripple are not the same thing: the network is open source and runs independently of the company.
How XRP works
The XRP Ledger does not use mining. A group of independent validators agrees on the order of transactions every few seconds through its own consensus protocol.
All 100 billion XRP were created at launch; there is no new issuance. Each transaction destroys a tiny fraction of XRP as a fee, which slowly reduces supply. A significant part of Ripple's tokens sits in escrow accounts with scheduled releases.
What XRP is used for
- International transfers and remittances that settle in seconds.
- Bridge asset between two different currencies in payment flows.
- Paying fees and meeting account reserves on the XRP Ledger.
- Trading on the network's native decentralized exchange.
Risks and points of attention
- Concentration: Ripple holds a large share of supply, and scheduled releases can increase the amount available in the market.
- Regulatory history: the asset was the subject of a long court dispute with the US securities regulator that began in 2020.
- Adoption by financial institutions does not guarantee demand for the token, since some products work without XRP.
- High volatility, with sharp moves around legal and market news.
