What is Tether?
USDT is a stablecoin launched in 2014 and issued by the company Tether. Each unit aims to be worth one US dollar, and the issuer states that it holds reserves matching the amount in circulation.
Unlike Bitcoin, USDT is centralized: issuance, redemption and reserves depend on the company. The token circulates on several blockchains, such as Ethereum, Tron and Solana.
How Tether works
Tether issues new tokens when eligible customers deposit dollars and destroys them on redemption. In the secondary market, arbitrage between the trading price and the redemption value tends to keep the quote close to $1.
Reserves consist mainly of US Treasury bills and other assets, disclosed in periodic reports published by the company itself.
USDT on each network is a different token. Sending it to an address on another network, or over a network the destination platform does not support, can result in lost funds.
What USDT is used for
- The most widely used trading pair on cryptocurrency exchanges.
- A way to step out of volatility without converting to traditional currency.
- International transfers and remittances that settle in minutes.
- Collateral and liquidity in decentralized finance applications.
Risks and points of attention
- Issuer risk: the peg depends on the reserves and on the company's ability to honor redemptions.
- Temporary depeg: the price can move away from $1 during market stress.
- Freezing: the issuer can block tokens at specific addresses, for example at the request of authorities.
- Regulatory and currency risk: stablecoin rules vary by country, and the value in other currencies follows the dollar exchange rate.

Frequently asked questions about Tether
Is USDT always worth 1 dollar?
That is the goal, but it is not guaranteed. The market price usually moves by fractions of a cent and has drifted further from the peg during periods of stress.
What is the difference between USDT and USDC?
Both aim for a dollar peg, but they are issued by different companies, with different reserve composition, audits and regulatory status. Compare issuer, transparency and supported networks.
Which network should I use to send USDT?
The same network accepted by the destination wallet or exchange. Fees and speed differ across Ethereum, Tron, Solana and others, and picking the wrong network can cause loss of funds.
Why does the USDT price in Brazilian reais change?
Because USDT tracks the dollar. Its value in reais rises or falls with the exchange rate even when the dollar peg holds.
