What is Dash?
Dash was launched in January 2014 by Evan Duffield, first under the names XCoin and Darkcoin. The current name comes from digital cash.
The project pioneered two ideas later copied by other networks: masternodes and its own treasury, which funds development with part of the issuance.
How Dash works
The network has two layers. Miners produce blocks with the X11 algorithm. Masternodes, run by those who deposit one thousand DASH as collateral, provide extra services: instant payment confirmation, protection against block reorganization and an optional coin-mixing function.
Each block's reward is split among miners, masternodes and the treasury, whose spending is voted on by masternode operators.
What DASH is used for
- Everyday payments with fast confirmation and low fees.
- Running masternodes in exchange for rewards.
- Voting on the use of the network treasury.
Risks and points of attention
- Declining adoption and liquidity relative to newer cryptocurrencies.
- The optional privacy function has led some exchanges to restrict the asset in certain countries.
- Decision power concentrated among those with the capital to run masternodes.
- Volatility typical of crypto assets.
