What is Stacks?
The project was founded by Muneeb Ali and Ryan Shea under the name Blockstack. In 2019 it held the first token offering qualified by the US securities regulator, and the current network went live in January 2021.
The aim is to enable financial applications and smart contracts that use Bitcoin as their security and settlement base, without changing Bitcoin itself.
How Stacks works
Under the proof-of-transfer mechanism, those who want to produce Stacks blocks spend bitcoin, and that bitcoin is passed on to those who lock STX to support the network. That is why locking STX earns rewards in BTC.
Every Stacks block is recorded on Bitcoin. The network uses its own contract language, designed to be predictable, and offers sBTC, an asset that represents bitcoin inside the network.
What STX is used for
- Paying fees and running smart contracts.
- Locking tokens to earn bitcoin rewards.
- Decentralized finance applications based on Bitcoin.
Risks and points of attention
- Assets that represent bitcoin on other networks depend on a group of signers and carry bridge risk.
- Growing competition from other layer-2 solutions for Bitcoin.
- An application ecosystem that is still small.
- High volatility.
