What is Cronos?

CRO was launched in 2018 by the company now called Crypto.com. It began as a platform benefits token and later became the native asset of the Cronos ecosystem's blockchains.

The Cronos network is compatible with Ethereum applications and was built with technology from the Cosmos ecosystem.

How Cronos works

On the network, CRO pays fees and is staked with validators. On the exchange, keeping CRO locked unlocks benefit tiers such as card cashback and fee discounts, subject to change by the company.

In 2021, 70 billion CRO were removed from circulation. In 2025, a governance vote approved re-creating those tokens as a gradually released reserve, which restored the maximum supply to 100 billion.

What CRO is used for

  • Paying fees and staking on the Cronos networks.
  • Benefits in the Crypto.com app, card and exchange.
  • Liquidity in the ecosystem's decentralized finance applications.

Risks and points of attention

  • Dependence on Crypto.com, which can change benefits and lock-up rules.
  • Re-creating previously burned tokens shook part of the community's trust in the supply policy.
  • Voting power concentrated in validators linked to the company.
  • Card and cashback terms vary by country and change often.
