What is PayPal USD?
PYUSD launched in August 2023 and was the first stablecoin from a major US payments company. It is issued by Paxos Trust Company, an institution supervised by New York State's financial regulator.
The token can be bought, held and sent in the PayPal and Venmo apps in eligible markets, and it also circulates on public blockchains.
How PayPal USD works
Each PYUSD is redeemable for one dollar. Reserves are held in dollar deposits, short-term US Treasuries and equivalents, and the issuer publishes monthly reports on the backing.
Outside PayPal's apps, the token works like any other on its network: it can be moved to self-custody wallets and used in decentralized applications.
What PYUSD is used for
- Payments and transfers within the PayPal ecosystem.
- Merchant settlement and international remittances.
- Trading and liquidity on exchanges and in decentralized finance.
Risks and points of attention
- Availability in PayPal's apps is limited to some countries; elsewhere, access is usually through exchanges or wallets.
- Risk of the issuer and custodian banks.
- The issuer can freeze or seize tokens when legally required.
- Currency risk: its value in other currencies follows the dollar exchange rate.
