What is Ripple USD?

RLUSD launched in December 2024. It is issued by Standard Custody & Trust Company, a Ripple subsidiary holding a trust company charter from New York State's financial regulator.

The token circulates on the XRP Ledger and on Ethereum and is used in Ripple's payment products for institutions.

How Ripple USD works

According to the issuer, each RLUSD is backed by at least an equivalent amount of dollars and cash equivalents, such as short-term US Treasuries. The company publishes periodic reports on the reserves.

RLUSD does not replace XRP: the two assets coexist in Ripple's products, one as a digital dollar and the other as the network's native currency.

What RLUSD is used for

  • Cross-border payments and settlement for companies.
  • Trading and collateral on exchanges and in decentralized finance.
  • Digital dollar inside the XRP Ledger.

Risks and points of attention

  • A recent stablecoin with smaller circulation than the leaders.
  • Risk of the issuer and reserve custodians.
  • The issuer can freeze tokens when legally required.
  • Currency risk: its value in other currencies follows the dollar exchange rate.
