What is Aave?
The project began in 2017 under the name ETHLend, founded by Stani Kulechov, and was relaunched as Aave. The AAVE token in its current form has existed since 2020.
The protocol lets users deposit crypto assets to earn interest and borrow against other assets as collateral, all through smart contracts and with no credit check.
How Aave works
Deposits form liquidity pools. Borrowers must keep collateral worth more than the debt; if its value falls below a threshold, the position is liquidated. Interest rates vary with supply and demand for each asset.
AAVE holders vote on protocol changes and can lock tokens in a safety module, which serves as a reserve to cover potential shortfalls in exchange for rewards. The protocol also issues the GHO stablecoin.
What AAVE is used for
- Voting on governance proposals.
- Staking in the protocol's safety module.
- Exposure to the growth of decentralized credit.
Risks and points of attention
- Bugs in smart contracts or price oracles can create uncovered debt.
- Staked tokens can be used to cover protocol losses.
- Using the protocol to borrow involves the risk of collateral liquidation.
- Regulatory risk around decentralized lending.
