What is Global Dollar?

USDG was launched in 2024 by Paxos, a company that also issues other regulated stablecoins. Issuance is handled by an entity supervised by Singapore's monetary authority and, in the European Union, by an electronic money institution regulated in Finland.

The token was born alongside the Global Dollar Network, a consortium of exchanges, payment companies and a custodian that distribute the stablecoin.

How Global Dollar works

Each USDG can be redeemed for one dollar with Paxos by eligible customers. Reserves are held in dollars, short-term government securities and cash equivalents.

The difference from traditional stablecoins is the economic model: most of the yield on reserves is passed to partner companies in proportion to the usage they drive.

What USDG is used for

  • Trading and settlement on partner exchanges and platforms.
  • Digital dollar payments and transfers.
  • Liquidity in decentralized finance applications.

Risks and points of attention

  • A recent stablecoin with smaller circulation than the leaders.
  • Risk of the issuer and reserve custodians.
  • Liquidity concentrated on the consortium's platforms.
  • Currency risk: its value in other currencies follows the dollar exchange rate.
