What is Worldcoin?
The project launched in July 2023 through Tools for Humanity, a company co-founded by OpenAI's Sam Altman and by Alex Blania. In 2024 it was renamed simply World.
The central idea is World ID: a credential proving that someone is a unique human, at a time when artificial intelligence makes it hard to tell people from bots online.
How Worldcoin works
Verification is done by a device called the Orb, which photographs the iris and generates a unique code. The project states that images do not need to be stored and that zero-knowledge proofs allow the identity to be used without revealing personal data.
Verified people can receive WLD distributions in countries where this is allowed. The token is also used for governance and to pay fees on World Chain, the project's layer-2 network.
What WLD is used for
- Distribution to verified users.
- Paying fees and using applications on World Chain.
- Taking part in project governance.
Risks and points of attention
- Privacy concerns: data protection authorities in several countries have investigated or restricted iris collection. In Brazil, the data protection authority ordered in 2025 the suspension of payment in exchange for collection.
- Much of the supply is locked with the team and investors, and unlocks increase the amount in circulation.
- The token's value depends on adoption of World ID, which is still uncertain.
- High volatility.
