What is Ethereum?

Ethereum is a public network proposed by Vitalik Buterin in 2013 and launched on July 30, 2015. Besides recording transfers, it executes programs called smart contracts, which run exactly as written without a central operator.

Ether (ETH) is the network's native asset. It is used to pay the fee for every operation, known as gas, and to take part in block validation.

How Ethereum works

Since the upgrade known as The Merge, in September 2022, the network has used proof of stake: validators deposit ETH as collateral (staking) to propose and confirm blocks, and can lose part of that deposit if they break the rules.

Every transaction pays a fee. Part of it, the base fee, is destroyed (burned), which reduces net ETH issuance during periods of heavy use. There is no fixed supply cap as in Bitcoin.

Much of the activity happens on layer-2 networks, which process transactions off the main chain and post the result back to it to inherit its security and charge lower fees.

What ETH is used for

  • Paying fees to transfer assets and use applications on the network.
  • Collateral and liquidity in decentralized finance (DeFi), such as lending and decentralized exchanges.
  • Foundation for issuing tokens, stablecoins, NFTs and tokenized assets.
  • Staking: locking ETH to validate the network in exchange for variable rewards.

Risks and points of attention

  • High volatility, with deep historical drawdowns in bear markets.
  • Bugs in smart contracts and third-party applications can cause losses even while the network itself works.
  • Gas fees rise when the main network is congested.
  • Staking involves exit queues, validator penalty risk and intermediary risk when done through a third party.

Frequently asked questions about Ethereum

What is the difference between Ethereum and ether?

Ethereum is the name of the network. Ether (ETH) is the native currency used to pay fees and to stake. In everyday use, many people say Ethereum for both.

Does ETH have a maximum supply?

No. There is no fixed cap. Issuance depends on how much ETH is staked, and part of the fees is burned, which can make net supply flat or even shrink during heavy use.

What are gas fees?

Gas is the amount paid in ETH for a transaction or contract to be processed. The cost varies with demand for block space and with the complexity of the operation.
