What is POL?

Polygon was founded in 2017 in India under the name Matic Network. Its main network, Polygon PoS, runs alongside Ethereum and offers fast, cheap transactions compatible with the same wallets and applications.

In September 2024, the MATIC token began to be replaced by POL at a 1-to-1 rate. On the Polygon PoS network, the swap was automatic.

How POL works

Validators stake POL to produce blocks and record periodic checkpoints on Ethereum. Transaction fees are paid in POL.

The new token was designed to serve several networks in the ecosystem at once, connected by an aggregation layer. There is annual issuance for validators and a community fund, which governance can change.
