What is Filecoin?
Filecoin was created by Juan Benet's Protocol Labs, the same organization behind the IPFS protocol. The project held one of the largest initial token sales of 2017 and launched its main network in October 2020.
The aim is to create an open storage market as an alternative to large cloud providers.
How Filecoin works
Storage providers strike deals with clients and must prove to the network, continuously and cryptographically, that they are storing the agreed data. To operate, they deposit FIL as collateral and lose part of it if they fail.
Block rewards are distributed according to proven capacity. Maximum supply is 2 billion FIL, and the network also runs smart contracts.
What FIL is used for
- Paying for data storage and retrieval.
- Collateral deposited by storage providers.
- Transaction and smart contract fees.
Risks and points of attention
- Paid demand for storage is smaller than the capacity available.
- Operating as a provider requires a large investment in hardware and collateral.
- Competition from traditional cloud services and other storage networks.
- A sharp price decline since the 2021 peak.
