What is Pi Network?

Pi Network was created in 2019 by Nicolas Kokkalis and Chengdiao Fan, Stanford University PhDs. The aim is to bring cryptocurrency to ordinary people without special equipment.

For years the app accumulated tens of millions of sign-ups while the coin could not be transferred out. The open network, which allowed trading on exchanges, began on February 20, 2025.

How Pi Network works

What the app calls mining does not use the phone's processor: the user checks in daily and receives coins under distribution rules that also take into account the people they invited.

To move coins, users must pass identity verification and migrate their balance to the main network, a process that can be slow. Part of the balance stays locked for periods chosen by the user.

What PI is used for

  • Payments between users and in Pi ecosystem apps.
  • Trading on exchanges that list the coin.

Risks and points of attention

  • Much of the supply is still locked or held by the team, and gradual release pressures the price.
  • The price fell sharply after the network opened.
  • Criticism of the invite-driven growth model, personal data collection and validator centralization.
  • Frequent scams exploiting the project's name, with fake wallets and fake purchase offers.

Frequently asked questions about Pi Network

Does mining Pi on a phone drain the battery?

Not meaningfully, because there is no real mining: the app only records the user's daily check-in and distributes coins under its own rules.

Can Pi be sold?

Since the network opened in February 2025, the coin has traded on some exchanges. First, users must complete identity verification and migrate their balance.

Is Pi Network a scam?

The project exists and has a working network, but it faces criticism over transparency and its distribution model. There are also many third-party scams using its name. Never share your recovery phrase.
