What is Jupiter?
Jupiter began as an aggregator: when a user wants to swap one token for another, it splits the trade across various Solana liquidity sources to get the best price.
Over time it added limit orders, recurring buys, perpetual contracts and lending. The JUP token was distributed in January 2024 to platform users.
How Jupiter works
The platform does not hold user funds: swaps are executed by smart contracts straight from the wallet. Revenue comes from fees charged on some products.
JUP holders stake to vote on decisions of the organization governing the project. Part of revenue is used to buy back the token, and the community has approved burns that reduced total supply.
What JUP is used for
- Staking and voting in Jupiter governance.
- Exposure to platform revenue through buybacks.
Risks and points of attention
- Dependence on activity on Solana, closely tied to meme token cycles.
- Token unlocks for the team and new distributions increase circulating supply.
- Products such as perpetual contracts involve leverage and liquidation risk for users.
- Smart contract risk.
