What is Cosmos Hub?
Cosmos was conceived by Jae Kwon and Ethan Buchman, and the Cosmos Hub went live in March 2019. The idea is an internet of blockchains: each project creates its own network with its own rules, and all exchange data and assets.
Several well-known networks in the market were built with Cosmos's open-source tools, even without using ATOM.
How Cosmos Hub works
Communication between networks runs on a standard protocol, IBC, which transfers assets and messages without a central intermediary. Each network has its own validators.
ATOM is staked to secure the Cosmos Hub. Issuance varies with the share of tokens staked, and withdrawing requires a three-week waiting period.
What ATOM is used for
- Staking by delegating to Cosmos Hub validators.
- Paying fees on the network.
- Voting on governance proposals.
Risks and points of attention
- Cosmos tools can be used without ATOM, which limits the value the token captures.
- Continuous inflation dilutes those who do not stake.
- Public disputes between founders and frequent changes of strategy.
- Unstaking takes about 21 days.
