What is Ethereum Classic?
In 2016, an attack on a project called The DAO diverted millions of ethers. Most of the community approved a change to the network's history to return the funds, and that version became today's Ethereum.
A minority rejected the change, on the principle that a blockchain's record should not be altered, and stayed on the original chain, which came to be called Ethereum Classic.
How Ethereum Classic works
The network runs smart contracts like Ethereum but remains on proof of work. After Ethereum abandoned mining in 2022, part of the miners moved to Ethereum Classic.
Monetary policy is capped: the block reward falls 20% every 5 million blocks, leading to a maximum supply of around 210.7 million units.
What ETC is used for
- Paying fees and running smart contracts on the network.
- Mining with graphics cards and dedicated hardware.
- Store of value with limited supply.
Risks and points of attention
- The network suffered 51% attacks in 2019 and 2020, with block reorganizations and double spending.
- A much smaller application ecosystem than Ethereum's.
- Development with limited resources and small teams.
- High volatility.

Frequently asked questions about Ethereum Classic
What is the difference between Ethereum and Ethereum Classic?
They have been separate networks since 2016. Ethereum Classic kept the original history and mining; Ethereum reversed The DAO attack and, in 2022, moved to proof of stake.
Does ETC have a maximum supply?
Yes, about 210.7 million units, with issuance reduced every 5 million blocks.
What is a 51% attack?
It is when someone controls most of the mining power and can rewrite recent blocks. Networks with less mining power are more vulnerable.
Where does the Ethereum Classic price on this page come from?
