What is Arbitrum?
Arbitrum was developed by Offchain Labs, a company created by Princeton University researchers, and its main network has been open to the public since 2021.
The ARB token was distributed in March 2023 to early network users, ecosystem organizations, the team and investors.
How Arbitrum works
The network batches many transactions, executes them off Ethereum and publishes the data on the main chain. By default, transactions are assumed valid, and there is a window for any participant to challenge an incorrect result.
ARB does not pay fees: they are charged in ETH. The token grants voting rights in the organization that controls network upgrades and a treasury worth billions.
What ARB is used for
- Voting on network governance and use of the treasury.
- Delegating votes to representatives.
- Incentives distributed to applications and users.
Risks and points of attention
- A token with no fee-payment role and no automatic right to network revenue.
- Scheduled unlocks for the team and investors increased supply over the years.
- Centralized components, such as the operator that orders transactions and a council with emergency powers.
- Strong competition among layer-2 networks.

What is an optimistic rollup?
It is a network that processes transactions off Ethereum and treats them as valid by default, with a window for challenges through fraud proofs.
Do withdrawals from Arbitrum to Ethereum take long?
Through the official bridge, a withdrawal takes about a week because of the challenge window. Third-party bridges are faster but add risks and costs.
