What is Gram?
The Open Network was designed in 2018 by the Telegram team. After a dispute with the US securities regulator, Telegram abandoned the project in 2020, and the network came to be developed by the community and the TON Foundation.
On June 15, 2026, following a community vote, the coin stopped being called Toncoin (TON) and became Gram (GRAM), a name that appeared in the original documentation. The network is still called The Open Network.
How Gram works
Only the name and ticker changed: balances, addresses, contracts and staking positions are the same, and no migration or token swap is needed. Offers to convert TON into GRAM are scams.
The network uses proof of stake and splits processing into shards to scale. Integration with Telegram enables wallets, payments and mini apps inside the messenger itself.
What GRAM is used for
- Paying transaction fees on the TON network.
- Staking to validate the network, directly or through pools.
- Payments, mini apps and games inside Telegram.
Risks and points of attention
- Dependence on Telegram: network usage is tied to the decisions and legal situation of the company and its founder.
- Tokens concentrated in a few addresses since the initial distribution.
- The rename opens the door to fake-migration scams and to confusion with older tokens called Gram.
- High volatility.
