What is Bittensor?
Bittensor went live in 2021, created by Jacob Steeves and Ala Shaabana. The aim is to form an open market for artificial intelligence in which any participant can offer a service and be paid according to the quality delivered.
The TAO token follows a design inspired by Bitcoin: a maximum supply of 21 million and periodic reductions in issuance.
How Bittensor works
The network is divided into subnets, each dedicated to a task such as text generation, price prediction or storage. In each subnet, miners do the work and validators score the results; TAO issuance is split according to those scores.
Since 2025, each subnet has had its own token, traded against TAO, and the amount of TAO allocated to it influences how much of the issuance it receives.
What TAO is used for
- Staking with validators and allocating to subnets.
- Paying to register and operate subnets.
- Rewarding those who provide AI models and compute.
Risks and points of attention
- A complex system that is hard to assess: the real usefulness of many subnets is still uncertain.
- A security incident in 2024, when the network was paused after user funds were stolen.
- Influence concentrated in a few validators.
- A price highly sensitive to market interest in artificial intelligence.
