What is Algorand?
Algorand went live in June 2019. Its creator, Silvio Micali, received the Turing Award for contributions to cryptography.
The network was designed to reconcile security, scale and decentralization, and is used in payments, tokenization and digital identity projects.
How Algorand works
In the pure proof-of-stake model, the protocol secretly and randomly selects, for each block, who proposes and who validates, weighted by each participant's balance. There are no forks: a confirmed block is final.
Maximum supply is 10 billion ALGO. Since 2025, those who run a validating node with a minimum balance receive block rewards.
What ALGO is used for
- Paying transaction and smart contract fees.
- Staking by taking part in consensus.
- Issuing tokenized assets and stablecoins.
Risks and points of attention
- Activity and value deposited in applications below those of competing networks.
- A sharp price decline from its peak, with a long period of depreciation.
- A significant share of tokens historically distributed by entities linked to the project.
- Intense competition among smart contract platforms.
