What is MEXC?

MEXC is a global crypto exchange known for a very large token catalogue, fast listings of new projects and very low trading fees. Founded in 2018 and run as "MEXC Global", it has a registered entity in Seychelles and cites an international crypto licence issued by Comoros — not the same as authorization from a top-tier financial regulator. The platform offers spot, futures, P2P trading, a project launch area and yield products. This review is educational content, not a recommendation to open an account or buy crypto.

As of 7 Sep 2026, CoinGecko listed MEXC among the largest exchanges by spot volume (around US$1 billion in 24 hours), with more than 1,600 coins and about 2,000 pairs, and it showed exchange reserve data and a high trust score. These figures change and reflect the moment of the check, not a permanent guarantee.

Regulation and availability: confirm you can use it

MEXC does not hold licences from top-tier regulators such as the SEC, CFTC, FCA or a MiCA registration in the EU; the operation relies on offshore registrations and licences. It restricts users from several territories — including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, mainland China, Hong Kong and Singapore — and the list changes often. Before opening an account, confirm the service is offered legally and appropriately in your country and which features are enabled for your account. An offshore registration does not automatically transfer consumer protection to where you live, and support can be limited in cross-border disputes.

Identity verification (KYC)

MEXC uses tiered verification: some trading could be done with minimal verification in the past, but the KYC requirement has increased and varies by jurisdiction and account level. Accounts without full verification tend to have lower withdrawal limits and can face blocks when they request a withdrawal. Assume full verification will be required at some point and avoid holding a meaningful balance in an account that has not completed it.

How the platform works

Spot and convert: the simplest way to buy and sell; compare the final price, not just the advertised fee. Futures: leveraged contracts with liquidation and funding costs that amplify gains and losses. P2P: user-to-user trades with MEXC escrowing the crypto; local-currency payment risk (chargebacks, fraud, bank blocks) sits with the parties. Launches and new listings: early access to projects that concentrates liquidity, volatility and track-record risk. MX Token and yield products: the platform token gives fee discounts; yield products carry lock-up, counterparty, protocol and price risk.

While your balance sits on the exchange there is counterparty risk: you depend on the company's systems, rules, liquidity and withdrawal availability. That is different from self-custody, where you control the keys and take on backup and recovery.

Fees: low, but check your own case

Per MEXC's material, spot trading uses a 0% maker fee and about 0.05% taker; futures reference is 0% maker and about 0.02% taker. Holding MX Token can add a discount. Withdrawals charge the blockchain network fee and vary by asset. "Zero fee" campaigns, discount tiers and promotions change often and may be time-limited — check the live order preview for price, amount received, effective fee, network and minimum withdrawal.

Security, reserves and track record

MEXC requires two-factor authentication, discloses a protection fund for extreme events and publishes a Proof of Reserves page with Merkle-tree verification; CoinGecko also shows a reserve figure for the exchange. These are useful transparency signals with limits: the scope may not cover all assets and liabilities, the verification is not a full financial audit, and a reserves snapshot does not prevent freezes, operational failure or market loss. The track record shows no major treasury breach; the most cited incident was a 2023 exploit in a specific token contract, with losses covered by the exchange. Account protection still depends on you: a unique password, protected email, two-factor authentication, anti-phishing controls and care with fake domains and requests for codes.

A huge catalogue: broad access, concentrated risk

MEXC lists thousands of tokens and often opens markets for projects very early. That widens research but concentrates risk: low-liquidity pairs have wide spreads and poor execution, new projects can see sharp price moves and pump-and-dump schemes, and low-volume assets can be delisted. Many coins on a screen do not mean many good opportunities.

Advantages and limits

In favor: some of the lowest trading fees on the market, a very broad altcoin catalogue with early access to launches, high volume on major pairs, complete trading tools and a working app. Limits: no top-tier regulatory licence and only offshore registrations, restricted availability in several countries, heavy exposure to high-risk tokens, reserve transparency with limited scope, and support quality that can vary.

Risks to understand

Centralized custody can involve outages, maintenance, freezes, verification demands or rule changes that affect access to your balance and withdrawals. The operation relies on offshore registrations, so rule changes in any jurisdiction can restrict features or access. The restricted-country list changes, and using a VPN to bypass a block violates the terms and can freeze an account. Small altcoin pairs can have wide spreads and exit difficulty under stress. Futures and margin can cause rapid liquidation. Sending through an incompatible network or to a wrong address may prevent recovery. Using an exchange based offshore does not exempt you from the tax obligations of your own jurisdiction; keep records of every operation. Always reach the platform through the official app or by typing the address, and distrust "promoters", groups, airdrops and links received by message.

Checklist

Confirm the service and features are available in your country. Use the official app or type the address; do not follow links from messages. Turn on a unique password and two-factor authentication. Check fee, spread, network and minimum withdrawal in the preview. Test with a small deposit and withdrawal. Trade P2P only inside the platform and confirm receipt before releasing. Do not confuse spot with futures, launches or yield products. Keep only what you need on the exchange and study self-custody for larger amounts. Never use emergency savings.

Conclusion

MEXC delivers low fees, a giant catalogue and fast access to launches, which is why it appeals to altcoin traders. The trade-off is a fragile regulatory base, changing usage restrictions, reserve transparency with limited scope and heavy exposure to high-risk assets. For a beginner it makes more sense to master the spot market, use amounts that fit the budget, keep off the exchange what does not need to be there and compare with other options before deciding. Do not trade an editorial review for a guarantee of safety or return.
