Is Mercado Bitcoin reliable? Review of the Brazilian exchange
How Mercado Bitcoin works, what changes with Brazil's new Central Bank rules, how to weigh its fees and which risks to check before using an account.

What is Mercado Bitcoin?
Mercado Bitcoin is the largest crypto exchange in Brazil and one of the oldest still operating in the country. Founded in 2013 in São Paulo and controlled by the 2TM holding company, it positions itself as a "digital investment platform", offering crypto trading alongside tokenized fixed income, staking and other products. This review is educational content, not a recommendation to open an account or buy crypto.
The company reports a base of more than 4 million clients (its own figure, not independently audited). Trading volume is modest next to the large global exchanges: as of 7 Sep 2026, CoinGecko showed daily volume in the low single-digit millions of dollars, a trust score of 6/10 and around 320 listed coins.
Regulation in Brazil
Mercado Bitcoin operates under Brazil's virtual-asset law (Lei nº 14.478/2022), which made the Central Bank (Banco Central do Brasil) the sector regulator. On 2 June 2023 it received Central Bank authorization to act as a payment institution in the electronic-money issuer category and launched the MB Pay digital account. The group's brokerage entity, Mercado Bitcoin CTVM S.A., sits inside a prudential conglomerate supervised by the Central Bank.
In November 2025 the Central Bank published Resolutions BCB 519, 520 and 521, covering market entry, day-to-day operation and foreign-exchange operations for virtual-asset service providers. Resolution 520 took effect on 2 February 2026; FX reporting for virtual-asset operations became mandatory on 4 May 2026; and providers already in business have until 30 October 2026 to file for formal authorization. The framework is still in transition, so "registered" or "authorized" does not mean "risk free".
How the platform works
Quick Trade vs Classic/Pro: Quick Trade buys and sells in a few taps with a spread built into the price; the Classic/Pro area shows the order book and charges maker/taker fees. Compare the final price, not just the advertised fee. Deposits and withdrawals in Brazilian reais run over Pix and are usually instant. The platform also offers staking, an MB Token and tokenized fixed income; an advertised yield does not remove lock-up, counterparty, protocol, liquidity or price risk.
While your balance sits on the exchange there is counterparty risk: you depend on the company's systems, rules, liquidity and withdrawal availability. That is different from self-custody, where you control the keys and take on backup and recovery.
Fees
Per Mercado Bitcoin's official material, trading fees follow a maker/taker model starting around 0.30%, with volume discounts and a "Zero Fee" window in the first 48 hours after opening an account. Pix and bank deposits, and withdrawals in reais, are stated as free; Quick Trade charges through the spread. Fees, discount tiers, promotions and withdrawal rules change — check the live order preview before you confirm.
Security and transparency
Mercado Bitcoin says it applies governance, information-security and risk-management practices and reports to the Brazilian tax authority and the Central Bank. As of this review it did not publish an independently verifiable proof of reserves — CoinGecko listed exchange reserve data as unavailable. Account protection still depends on you: a unique password, protected email, two-factor authentication and care with fake domains, urgent messages and requests for codes. Legitimate support never asks for a password, recovery phrase, private key or authentication code.
Advantages and limits
In favor: a Brazilian operation with support and taxation in reais, a Central Bank payment institution licence, integrated Pix, products beyond crypto and a long local track record. Limits: a higher starting trading fee than many global exchanges, smaller liquidity and volume that can worsen execution outside the main assets, no public proof of reserves, and a smaller coin catalogue than the big international platforms.
Risks to understand
Centralized custody can mean outages, maintenance, freezes or rule changes that affect access to your balance. Crypto assets are volatile, including within hours. Low-volume pairs can have wide spreads and poor execution. Staking and tokenized fixed income carry counterparty, term and liquidity risk; read the redemption terms. The Central Bank framework for virtual-asset providers is being phased in through 2026 and rules may change. Always reach the platform through the official app or by typing the address, and distrust "promoters", groups and links received by message.
Checklist
Use the official app or type the address; do not follow links from messages. Turn on a unique password and two-factor authentication. Check fee, spread, network and minimum withdrawal in the preview. Test with a small deposit and withdrawal. Do not confuse spot buying with staking, tokenized fixed income or term products. Decide what stays on the exchange and study self-custody for larger amounts. Never use emergency savings.
Conclusion
Mercado Bitcoin pairs a Brazilian operation, integrated Pix and a Central Bank licence with higher starting costs and lower liquidity than the large global exchanges. For a beginner in Brazil it can make sense for its simplicity in reais and local support — provided the choice starts from the assets you actually use, the fees shown at the time, the withdrawal rules and your custody plan. Do not trade an editorial review for a guarantee of safety or return.
