Bitcoin Core 31.1 is out: a software update does not mean swapping your bitcoins
The July release fixes issues in software used by nodes; people who only hold BTC do not receive a “new coin.”

Bitcoin and Bitcoin Core are not the same thing
Bitcoin is the network and the digital asset. Bitcoin Core is one program used to run a full node and validate the network rules. On July 8, 2026, the project released version 31.1 with bug fixes.
This update mainly matters to people operating Bitcoin Core. It does not create a new BTC, require a coin conversion or ask investors to send funds to another address.
Why versions matter
The project maintains its three most recent major versions and recommends that operators use the newest maintenance release they can adopt. Versions outside the maintenance window generally stop receiving security fixes.
A useful rule for every investor
Update software only through official channels, verify the website address and follow the documentation before changing a wallet or node. If you buy BTC through an exchange and do not run a node, this news does not require you to install Bitcoin Core.
